God Gives Repentance
-
-
In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure
will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
-
(2 Timothy 2:25)
-
-
In other writings in this series, it's shown very clearly that repentance
is a prerequisite to spiritual regeneration. What wasn't so clear before
is the fact that repentance is a gift of God and is only given to the pure
in heart; those who truly are aware of their own unworthiness, deploring
the sins that they had previously committed in the sight of the Perfect,
Righteous, Holy Living God, Jehovah.
-
-
Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall
see the Lord: Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God;
lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby
many be defiled; Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person,
as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how
that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected:
for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with
tears.
-
(Hebrews 12:14-17)
-
-
We notice also that repenting must be an ongoing occurrence because we
are all sinful creatures and only by becoming aware of sins as they happen
and asking God's forgiveness can we purify ourselves on a continuing basis.
-
But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender
strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto
all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that
oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the
acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves
out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
-
(2 Timothy 2:23-26)
-
-
We can only obtain this ongoing spiritual cleansing if we continue in the
word with the comforting presence of the Holy Spirit, obeying His promptings.
-
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands,
ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning,
and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the
Lord, and he shall lift you up.
-
(James 4:8-10)
-
-
The second chapter of 2 Timothy is a meaty part of the Instruction Manual
for doers of the word.
-
Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting
may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue
in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that
hear thee.
-
(1 Timothy 4:15-16)
-
-
Let's go through this chapter with a fine toothed comb, with the help of
the Holy Spirit and see what we can learn so that we can do it and show
ourselves approved unto God.
-
Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same
commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Thou
therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that
warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he
may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. And if a man also strive
for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.
The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits. Consider
what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. Remember
that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according
to my gospel: Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto
bonds; but the word of God is not bound. Therefore I endure all things
for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is
in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. It is a faithful saying: For
if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: If we
suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he
also will deny us: If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he
cannot deny himself. Of these things put them in remembrance, charging
them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit,
but to the subverting of the hearers. Study to shew thyself approved
unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the
word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will
increase unto more ungodliness. And their word will eat as doth a canker:
of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; Who concerning the truth have erred,
saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of
some. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal,
The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the
name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not
only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and
some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself
from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for
the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. Flee also youthful
lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that
call on the Lord out of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions
avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord
must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure
will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that
they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken
captive by him at his will.
-
(2 Timothy 2:1-26)
-
-
For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did
repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though
it were but for a season. Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry,
but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly
manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

(2 Corinthians 7:8-9)

-
And the Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded: And he went out
to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin;
-
The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if
ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake
you.

(2 Chronicles 15:1-2)

Addendum.
-
In these days of the Laodicean church where "mega" churches are the new
wave and people's lusts are catered to, here are a few more Scriptures
that reveal the Spiritual whereabouts of the strait gate and narrow path.
-
For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they
discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go
into the land which the LORD had given them. And the LORD'S anger was kindled
the same time, and he sware, saying, Surely none of the men that came up
out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which
I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not
wholly followed me:
-
(Numbers 32:9-11)
-
Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land,
and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he
shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD;
trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring
forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because
of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked
devices to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself
in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that
wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.
-
(Psalms 37:3-9)
-
*To the chief Musician, even to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David.* I said,
I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep
my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.
-
(Psalms 39:1)
-
*To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.* I waited patiently for the LORD;
and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
-
(Psalms 40:1)
-
As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. What shall
we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. For
he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will
have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not
of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I
raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might
be declared throughout all the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he
will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. Thou wilt say then
unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay
but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed
say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not
the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto
honour, and another unto dishonour?
-
(Romans 9:13-21)
-
-
God will grant repentance (forgiveness) to those who truly search
for it.
- But seek ye first the kingdom of
God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added
unto you.
- (Matthew 6:33)
-
- This is a promise!
-
- Halleluljah!
-
-
Furthermore, we see that as we faithfully continue walking in God's ways,
searching for His perfection, our Heavenly Father decides how far we can
go.
-
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on
unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead
works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying
on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
And this will we do, if God permit.
-
(Hebrews 6:1-3)
