Part Two

The Blood Covenant

What is a covenant?
The Wongaroos were a peaceful and prosperous tribe who were accomplished farmers. The Buckaroos were a warlike people that exacted tribute by force of arms from all their neighbours. After increased demands made upon them the Wongaroos rebelled and a war ensued, a war that neither side won and consequently both became weaker. As a result of third party threats, an agreement was reached where the Buckaroos would protect the Wongaroos by their military strength in return for food supplies. In this way both tribes would benefit. To ensure that neither side would double-cross the other, a covenant was agreed to and a representative of each tribe was chosen.
At a ceremony attended by the people of both tribes, the terms of the agreement were publicly read out and each representative ritually cut his right hand and they shook hands. In this way was the covenant sealed as their blood intermingled. The use of the sword hand in the ceremony symbolised that there would be no back-stabbing by either party and the mingling of the blood signified that the two representatives had become blood brothers. This symbolism bound the people in the same way.
The scars remaining were displayed, and the terms of the covenant reread to a gathering of the people on an annual basis as constant reminders of the advantages of the covenant and also to deter any potential covenant breakers. If anyone from the one tribe broke the terms of the covenant, it was the duty of his own tribesmen to kill him to prevent any intertribal animosity.

The African tribes of South Africa still commonly make covenants with each other. If for example, a man from tribe A wishes to marry a woman from tribe B, the amount of Lobola (bride price) is agreed upon and then, at a ceremony where the relatives are present, a cow is slaughtered in a way to ensure that the blood is carefully allowed to flow into a shallow pit for all to see. The flesh is thereupon eaten and a celebratory feast results. This ceremony seals the covenant. Should the husband fail to pay the Lobola in the required time, it is the duty of a member of the prospective husband's family, even his sister, to kill him, or a feud or war between the tribes can ensue. Many of the "faction fights" described in the popular press could well be the result of broken covenants.
Another form of covenant, the result of which caused both world wars, is in the pattern of a peace treaty. In 1914 the King of England and the Kaiser of Germany were blood relatives, but as the result of different treaties, were forced into war with each other. When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, England declared war on her because of a treaty with Poland. The conditions of the covenants in each case were publicly agreed to and sealed by the signatures of the covenant representatives of the governments concerned. A similar treaty was ceremoniously signed at Komatipoort some time ago between President Botha of South Africa and President Machel of Mozambique.

Covenants are agreements or contracts that usually have common rules:
1 They have certain terms or last for a certain time.
2 They are unbreakable.
3 They are made in mutual interest, or in love, or both.
4 Both parties are willing participants. They are not forced into a covenant.
5 There is usually a person that acts for each group.
6 The covenant is sealed in a visible manner, in public.
7 Covenant breakers receive no mercy.

So far, we have dealt with covenants between nations. However, covenants are also made between people. The English explorer, Sir Henry Stanley, when in Africa, made blood covenants with many African chieftains. When approached in a threatening manner by strangers, he held up his right arm to display the scars of his covenants. The would-be aggressors then stood off in fear.

The Bible is a book of covenants

Between man and man according to the customs of the Israelites, and between God and man.

The most famous one between people, and one that is fully documented, was that between Jonathan (the heir to the throne of Israel) and David. If we read 1 Samuel 17:58 to 1 Samuel 18:4 we can see that Jonathan gave David his robe (symbolising himself), his sword, his bow (self protection) and his girdle, which was used to carry his weapons. This symbolised that Jonathan was putting himself at David's mercy. In today's terms, David could have at any time come up to Jonathan and said "Sorry brother, but I have crashed my car, failed to take out any insurance and need a new one. Where is our (Jonathan's) chequebook?" Jonathan would gladly have handed it over. Not only had they made a physical accord, but their souls were in alliance. They were one in thought in two bodies.

No wonder the idea of covenants is so strange to western man!

However, David was the one to fulfil the covenant terms:
If we read 1 Samuel 18:5-9 we see that Jonathan's father, King Saul, was jealous of David's fame and told lies about him. David however was faithful to his Covenant with God, (which is not recorded directly but must have taken place when he was still a shepherd boy) which resulted in him recognising that Saul was God's anointed, as we can see in 2 Samuel 1:1-17. David laments Jonathan's death in verse 26.
Because of the lies of Saul, it was generally believed that David would take vengeance on all of Saul's offspring when he became king, but in 2 Samuel 4 we see once again David's faithfulness to God. In 2 Samuel 9 David responds to his covenant with Jonathan even though Jonathan was dead. Why Mephibosheth was honoured was that he was "in" Jonathan at the time of the covenant being sealed, in other words that he was Jonathan's seed.* The covenant went on in David's and Jonathan's descendants until one of them decided to declare it void. In verse 13 we understand that Mephibosheth accepted the terms of his father's covenant and was now in covenant with David.
* see Hebrews 7:10
From this it can be deduced that the Children of Israel understood covenants and this is perhaps why the Bible does not give more detail concerning this subject.
Also, as we have already seen, God clearly wishes us to take the trouble to search the Scriptures, to find the Truth for ourselves.

Why does God wish to make a Covenant with man?
Before we go any further with specific details of two of God's Covenants with mankind, let us ask ourselves why does God wish to make a Covenant with us?
I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.
(Isaiah 43:6-7)
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
(Jeremiah 31:33)
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
(Revelation 4:11)
Remember, in part one (Being Born Again) we read that God informed us that He would put His will in us. What is God's purpose? He takes pleasure in us worshipping Him as our God and showing our love for Him by doing things that He likes. We must be prepared to be His people. Going back to the beginning of the Bible, we will notice that God talked to Adam in the garden, which means that He took pleasure in talking to Adam. He wants us to be with Him and will bless and protect us so that we are glad to be with Him.

God tests man to see how seriously he takes the Covenant because He knows how evil mankind is:
And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
(Genesis 6:6)
And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
(Genesis 8:21)

God makes us understand that this is a serious business
God made a way so that all people who want to be with Him, who want Him to be their God and protector, will remain faithful and not be like Adam. This method was in the form of a contract between God and man. As we can see all around us, contracts between man and man are there to be broken. The contract between God and man is unbreakable and God made sure that man understood this, because instead of the contract being sealed (made binding) with a blob of sealing wax or a signature, it is made with blood. All creatures of the earth have blood pumping through their bodies. Remove the blood and the life disappears.

Here are God's words:
And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people. For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood. And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust. For [it is] the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.
(Leviticus 17:10-14)

In the Old Testament, when man broke his Covenant with God by sinning, he had to offer blood to "cover" or hide those sins so that God would not see them. This was a temporary forgiveness, because as soon as man sinned again, he had to kill another animal. God laid down strict laws as to how and where and when these sacrifices had to be performed. These laws were very complicated and had to be adhered to or God would retaliate in righteousness. Those that obeyed these laws were blessed by God.

The reason being that God, being the Creator and man being the created; God being righteous and man unrighteous; God being of the spiritual (eternal) kingdom and man of the temporary, God could not make a Covenant directly with man. God made the Covenantal conditions. Man could only come into Covenant with his Creator when he obeyed those conditions.
For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you. But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.
(Jeremiah 7:22-24)

Covenantal Overview

Let us study an overview of God's increasing disclosure of Covenant knowledge as man develops. This history of advancing Covenant consciousness was also used to teach later generations of Jews where it all started; and this knowledge is still valid for us today.

It began with Adam:
God was disappointed with Adam because he didn't play by the Creator's rules, he broke trust, he broke a Covenant. So God, in His righteousness could not condone sin, but in His love, made a substitutive covenant system when He killed animals to cover Adam and Eve with bloody skins. He could have provided woven clothing, but instead used the covering of animals. This can be called the first sacrifice and God started it. The innocent animals were killed in the place of those who should have been killed.

The next example is also by inference and that was Abel's sacrificial offering to God:
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door.
(Genesis 4:3-7)
It would seem that God had shown Cain and Abel what He wanted, but Cain was determined to do it his way, not the way that God had ordained it to be. From the evidence of the next episode we presume that God accepted Abel's offering by consuming it with fire.

God unfolded more Covenant knowledge to Noah, and we know that in obedience to God, Noah constructed the Ark. For the first time the word Covenant is mentioned.
And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
(Genesis 6:6-8)
And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
(Genesis 6:12-13)
And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die. But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them. Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he. And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation. Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female. Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth. For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth. And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him.
(Genesis 6:17 - 7:5)

Here we notice that Noah took more than two of some animals, by God's command. The reason why is shown hereunder. Blood was spilled and flesh was consumed in the fire:
And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man. And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein. And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth. And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.
(Genesis 8:20-22 & 9:1-17)

Shem was one of Noah's three sons and was the ancestor of Abram. In Abram's Covenant with God we obtain more knowledge of God's Covenantal requirements. Abram also was obedient to God's will:
Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
(Genesis 12:1-4)
And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.
(Genesis 12:7)
The word altar means "to slay". From this we can deduce that Abram made a sacrifice of acknowledgement.

And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee. Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.
(Genesis 13:14-18)
He again acknowledged his obedience to God.

After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it. And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it? And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not. And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away. And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him. And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
(Genesis 15:1-18)
By the time that we come to the story of Moses, Covenants and sacrifices had become better known and God instructed Moses to write the conditions down. We can also understand more of this Covenant because God gave Moses specific procedures to follow.

These are described in Exodus chapters 19 to 23. The Covenant is sealed in Exodus 24:1-8:
And he said unto Moses, Come up unto the LORD, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship ye afar off. And Moses alone shall come near the LORD: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him. And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do. And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the LORD. And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient. And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.
There is much more in later chapters of Exodus, as well as in Leviticus, including a most interesting development, in that sacrifices were linked to events that took place at regular times of the year. These were various feasts, the best-known one being the Passover. This brought the people together in remembrance of God's mercy and His Covenant, to them the children of Israel. However we will not go into this in this brief study.

Two important Covenants in the Bible

With the preliminaries behind us, we can now examine two Covenants between God and man, which are actually variations of the same Covenant. One in the Old Covenant (Testament) and the other in the New Covenant (Testament)

The first words in the New Testament are:
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
(Matthew 1:1)
"Yes", you say "We all know that the Messiah comes from David's bloodline according to the flesh, But why mention Abraham? Why not Moses, or Elijah?" Here is a clue. God's number of perfection is seven. Twice seven is fourteen.
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
(Matthew 1:17)

So, let's look at the Abrahamic Covenant
And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.
(Genesis 17:1-14)
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together. And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen. And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
(Genesis 22:1-18)

For reasons not stated, God chose Abram out of a pagan-worshipping people in the region of Persia and instructed him to move his household to Canaan. Abram took his time about it but was obedient to his Creator and passed various tests, as a result of which God desired to make a Covenant with him. The conditions were that Abram was to believe that God was the only Living God, and in return God would protect him and his and he would be the father of a nation that would be near to God's heart. Abram accepted the conditions whereupon God instructed him to kill various animals for sacrifice, cut them down the middle longitudinally and lay the halves next to each other in two piles with a space between the two. Abram did what was required of him and then protected the pieces from the vultures. This was all that he could do, he could partake no further, from here on he was an onlooker. God then placed him in a trance so that he could see without getting in the way, while God performed the Covenant ceremony with another Spiritual being who represented Abram. It would seem, although the Bible does not state the fact, that this other Spiritual being was Jesus, who in the Old Covenant was often called "mine Angel" or "the angel of the LORD". We know that the person that we perceive as Jesus was there from the beginning as we can see from the following scriptures:

Genesis 1:26; John 1:1-4; Luke 10:18; Colossians 1:13-17.
In Exodus we notice some very significant terminology:
Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him. But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries. For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off.
(Exodus 23:20-23)
God says "for my name is in him". This is covenant talk and shows that God and Jesus were in covenant at that time. There was complete trust between them.

As we see in Genesis 17:17 (Abram), and in 18:10-12 (Sarai) had doubts as to God's supernatural power and in 16:1-2 we read that they took it upon themselves to provide Abram with an heir.

However, it took fourteen years from the time of the Covenant ceremony for Isaac to be born and the first part of God's promise to be fulfilled.
Abram, who God later called Abra-h-am, was put to the test many years after this. Did he really believe that God was who He said He was? God asked Him to sacrifice his only son. Would Abraham be obedient? He was, because he now knew that God would somehow fulfil His promise about his seed being as the stars in the sky. He thought perhaps that Isaac would be brought back to life.
And this is why God called Abraham His friend. Let's face it, Abraham was someone special.

The same covenant rules apply here
1a. They have certain terms.

   What God undertook to do:
After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
(Genesis 15:1)
God's offer of protection.

And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
(Genesis 15:5)

God's promise.

  What man must do:
And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
(Genesis 17:1)
God required man's obedience.

And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
(Genesis 17:8)
And recognition for who He is.

1b. Or last for a certain time.
And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
(Genesis 17:7)

2. They are unbreakable.

3. They are made in mutual interest, or in love, or both.

4. Both parties are willing participants. They are not forced into a covenant.
God showed Himself willing because He made the conditions. Abram was willing:
And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
(Genesis 15:6)

5. There is usually a person that acts for each group.
(Genesis 15:17-18)
This was the Covenant ceremony! Two beings that were visible in the dark were shown to Abram. He knew that the Covenant was being cut and accepted the conditions because we see that God accepted the Covenant.

An added indication of who the two beings were can perhaps be verified by additional verses:
And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
(Exodus 19:18)
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
(John 8:12)

6. The Covenant is sealed in a visible manner, in public.
(Genesis 17:9-13)
It is interesting to note that the man publicly accepted his Covenant with God when he allowed his son(s) to be circumcised. Firstly this was confirmation of a blood Covenant because blood was spilled (a sacrifice was made) and secondly the man was blessed, not the child being circumcised. This very significant fact will be dealt with later, when we come to baptism.

7. Covenant breakers receive no mercy.
Abraham was tested, to see if he was obedient, long after the Covenant was cut and Isaac was born:
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
(Genesis 22:1-2)
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
(Genesis 22:12)
By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
(Genesis 22:16-18)
It was only after this test, on that day, that Abraham was actually blessed with God's promise. Abraham proved his faithfulness to God's Covenant!

There were two tests and two rewards. The first was passed fourteen years after God's promise, when Isaac was born. Onlookers could see that what Abram had been saying for fourteen years had come to pass in the person of Isaac. The last was passed many years later.

Here is an example of what does happen to a Covenant breaker:
And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense. And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee. And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out. And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him. The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD. And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before. And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place: For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest. So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel. Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father. And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah. And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon, And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am. Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread. And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place: For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest. He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him. So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water. And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back: And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee, But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers. And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back. And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase. And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt. And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him. And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him. And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass. And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him. And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother! And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones: For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass. After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places. And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
(1 Kings 13)
"Goodness gracious" you might say, "Is God really like that?" Yes. You must learn to fear His awesome righteousness and realise that He is the Creator. Many people mock God from the pulpit and their end will not be pleasant.

Did the prophecy of the man of God come about? Yes. It is described in 2 Kings 22 to 2 Kings 23:18.
Like many people today, King Jeroboam was one of those who couldn't see the truth, even though it was placed before his nose.

Jeremiah chapter thirty four confirms the Covenant conditions.

The Covenant of the New Testament
The New Covenant is called the better Covenant, let's see why.

For about four hundred years before Jesus was born there had been no prophets of God in Israel and the Jews were wondering where God was. Also the Romans had invaded, demanding ransom (tribute). God had seemed to have turned His face from His Covenant people; so when John the Baptist, so obviously a prophet of God, came along and started baptising those who wanted their sins washed away, the Jewish people sat up and took notice. At last God had turned His face toward them, perhaps this John was the promised Messiah; and would chase the Romans away and be their king.
And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
(Luke 3:15)

Crowds gathered together from all over Israel to hear his words and this included religious leaders and government officials who came to observe. When he denied that he was the Messiah but a voice crying in the wilderness,
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. John did baptise in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey; And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptise you with the Holy Ghost.
(Mark 1:1-8)
he fulfilled the Old Covenant Scriptures of Isaiah 40:3, Malachi 3:1 and the last verses in the old Covenant, Malachi 3:5-6. The people realised that he was either a fake, or that the Messiah was about to be announced.
And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptise with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptise with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
(John 1:24-34)
From this Scripture we know that the spectators heard the truth, nevertheless many did not believe because they had forgotten the implications of their Covenant with God. The problem was that they were looking for a worldly king - they were looking for heaven on earth. When Jesus did not measure up to what the Pharisees and rulers expected Him to be, they used Him as a scapegoat (a Covenantal term) to appease the Romans, at the same time as ridding themselves of a thorn in the side:
Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
(John 11:45-53)
It is evident here that the people were thinking on a worldly level and not spiritual.

When He was crucified on the cross, Jesus once again had become a Covenant Representative on behalf of man, but this time He was also the Sacrifice, His own blood was spilled and the Covenant ceremony was performed in public for the benefit of all mankind. His blood sealed the Covenant. He was the Heavenly Sacrifice, who replaced all the Old Covenant sacrifices and laws. He was the final Blood Sacrifice. When the veil in the temple was torn from the top to the bottom as described in Mark 15:17-18, it signified that the Lord Jesus Christ had replaced the old priestly sacrificial system, that the people didn't need a high priest to go into the holy of holies and sprinkle blood on the Ark of the Covenant on their behalf anymore, because He was the new High Priest and we could approach God directly at any time when in Covenant through our Mediator.

The New Covenant was foreordained from the beginning:
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
(1 Peter 1:18-20)

This means that everything before the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth was also foreordained. Some thirty two Old Covenant Messianic prophesies were fulfilled in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. This is mind-boggling, isn't it! God and Jesus knew that Jesus would come onto the earth in the flesh, that He would walk as we walk, and experience our strengths and weaknesses. All the previous happenings in the Bible pointed to this, all the previous blood-spilling from Adam onwards was a forerunner of The Blood-spilling. All the previous Covenants were a shadow of The Covenant. All the conditions of the previous Covenants apply to The Covenant

Truly, this is a better Covenant.

The conditions are the same as before, lets go through them once more:

1. It has certain terms or lasts for a certain time.
2. It is unbreakable.
3. It is made in mutual love.
4. Both parties are willing participants. Man is not forced into Covenant.
5. There is usually a person who acts for each group.
6. The Covenant is sealed in a visible manner, in public.
7. Covenant breakers will receive no mercy.

Under the provision of the New Covenant:

God does not make a Covenant with mankind. God made this Covenant with the same person as before, namely His Son, Jesus Christ, our Representative. God laid down the conditions of the Covenant because He is God, and we New Covenant people come into Covenant with God when we accept Him as our God and the Lord Jesus Christ as His Son and our Redeemer.

We must learn to acknowledge God for who He is and not for what we might think Him to be.
Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.
(Mark 10:15)

It is most important to realise that the old Covenant dealt with worldly things, but the new Covenant as it applies to us is almost entirely spiritual:
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
(John 1:12)
If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
(John 3:12)
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
(John 4:23-24)
Once we take the first step by declaring Jesus our Lord and meaning it, God, the Creator, by His power, makes a spiritual bond with us in that we are joined with Him in Covenant. This is a spiritual happening and we have no control over it. We are now open to the will of God through His Spirit, who actually comes and lives in us.

The conditions once more:

1a. It has certain terms.
God's offer and man's requirement:
That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
(John 3:15)
Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
(John 9:31)

1b. Or lasts for a certain time.
The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne. If thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne for evermore.
(Psalms 132:11-12)
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
(Revelation 21:1-3)

2. It is unbreakable.
God is righteous and will never break Covenant unless we have done so first.
God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
(Numbers 23:19)
If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
(2 Timothy 2:12-13)

3. It is made in mutual love.

We know that God loves us:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
(John 3:16)
He is so righteous, full of lovingkindness and longsuffering, that when we sin (break Covenant), He will forgive us if we come back to the Covenant. We don't have to kill an animal for its blood to cover our sins, the blood of Jesus covered our sins for all time:
Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all
(Hebrews 10:8-10)

How much do we love Him? How much do we trust His word?
Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.
(Psalms 115:11)
Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
(Proverbs 2:5-6)
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
(Proverbs 3:5-6)
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
(Matthew 28:18-20)

4. Both parties are willing participants.
God has proved Himself willing to form a Covenant. Are you willing to make a spiritual change, to place your life in His hands?
That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
(Colossians 1:10)
He will not ask you to do more than you can stand:
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it
(1 Corinthians 10:13)

5. The Lord Jesus acted as man's Covenant Representative.
He bears the marks of the Covenant in His hands and body. When He reaches out to us, we see what He has done for us. He was the Sacrifice, and is the only Covenent Representative for mankind.

6. The Covenant is sealed in a visible manner, in public.
Our Representative did that for us on the same hill that Abraham was prepared to sacrifice Isaac, forty two generation earlier.

To accept the New Covenant, man has to publicly declare that Jesus was the Covenant representative, that Jesus is Lord. Only when you and I do this will God come into Covenant with us. That is why Jesus is called our Redeemer.
In place of circumcision of the foreskin, which became a ritual without meaning, our circumcision is of the heart, the visible evidence of which is there for all to see, namely the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives:
For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
(Romans 2:28-29)
For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
(Philippians 3:3)
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
(Colossians 2:6-12)

That Christians are in Covenant is evident by the presence of the Holy Spirit. The Comforter manifests Himself to us and is manifested to others through our changed lifestyles.
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
(Ephesians 3:14-21)

The Holy Spirit is given to one when he or she is born again and is a Covenantal manifestation.
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
(1 Corinthians 12:7)

7. Covenant makers are tested;
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
(Ephesians 4:30)

and Covenant breakers receive no mercy.
This is the requirement of which most churchgoers are frightened and most pastors are reluctant to preach about . However, for Christians it is very encouraging to discuss, because this gives us the assurance that heaven will be a peaceful place, to say the least.
And as for thee, if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, and do according to all that I have commanded thee, and shalt observe my statutes and my judgments; Then will I stablish the throne of thy kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel. But if ye turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them; Then will I pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house, which I have sanctified for my name, will I cast out of my sight, and will make it to be a proverb and a byword among all nations.
(2 Chronicles 7:17-20)
Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
(Revelation 3:4-5)
That we have remained in Covenant is tested, on that day which is God's mighty day of Judgement. Jesus will be our Mediator if we have passed this final test:
That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
(Hebrews 6:12-15)

And here dear reader, is one of the most effective, damaging, deceptions of Satan. He does his best to hide from us the fact that there are Covenantal terms. As soon as he was beaten by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, when the power of death was taken from him, he invented various shadow covenants to hide the real one from the unwary. One deception that we will deal with later, that has so many evangelicals in bondage, is that we need to say the sinner's prayer or become born again only and then need do nothing more; God will let us into heaven. What a lie!

There are two kinds of people on this earth, my dear brother or sister, those who are going to heaven and those who are not. Those that are born again, accept the terms of the Covenant and remain faithful, to God's satisfaction, will find that day to be their day of redemption. All others will end up in the lake that burns with brimstone. That is what the Bible teaches.
Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
(Matthew 13:24-30)
He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
(Matthew 13:37-43)
And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen.
(Matthew 22:1-14)
Please read Hebrews chapter six.

Is this starting to sound very complicated perhaps?
But it is so simple, all you have to do is believe and all this will be added to you supernaturally. You must make Jesus Christ Lord of your life. Don't trust in your own strength; believe that God can do anything; acknowledge that you are not worthy; that you are nothing in His sight; that Jesus is your Lord.
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
(Philippians 4:13)
When you are willing to humble yourself and become the servant of the Lord, He will be found willing to make you His child, with a future inheritance.

Child of God, when you believed that Jesus is the Christ, God, by a miracle, placed His will in you. You received the Comforter, The Holy Ghost. He is actually in your body and is the link between God and your spirit. Your spirit is in communication with your soul - which is your will, conscience, thoughts etc. - and your soul tells your body what to do.

Without you fully realising it, God has forgiven you your sins because of your Covenant through Jesus. When you believed that Jesus is God's Messiah, you cut spiritual Covenant with God. Your sins are covered and hidden by the blood of your Covenant Representative.
They are no more.
We will become the sons of God if we are in Covenant through the Son of God.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
(John 1:12)

Here is the next important step up the ladder to heaven. It is as important to understand as that of being born again!

When we became born again and asked for the Blood of Jesus to cover our sins and in love God declared us righteous, He fulfilled His side of the Covenant. Until the day of redemption, (also called the day of the Lord, the day of judgement, the last day, or the great day) God regards us as righteous because of that Covenant.

That is why some verses of the Bible seem to conflict with one another. Until that day we are regarded as righteous. God does not need to check that we are obeying our side of the Covenant because he presumes that we are. Only on that day will He accept anything different. And only then will it be a day of blessing or a day of condemnation depending on our works in Christ Jesus.

What does the word redemption mean? It comes from the word redeem. Redeem means to deem again. Deem means for God to regard us as Adam was before the fall. We shall belong to God again.

The Collins English Dictionary describes redeem as follows:
To recover possession or ownership of by payment of a price or service, to regain.

Many professing Christians do not understand that we are not saved by works, but by God's grace; however we are eventually redeemed by the works of faith:
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
(Ephesians 2:8-10)
To be created in Christ Jesus is to be in covenant with God through Christ Jesus, as a result of which, our works will be under the influence of the Holy Spirit.

Grace is described in two English dictionaries as follows:

The undeserved mercy of God.
Divine assistance given to man in spiritual rebirth.

Gracious - full of, or characterised by, grace and kindness.

Merciful, compassionate.
That is God, gracious.

You may ask "How do I do my part, how do I maintain the Covenant?"
The answer is; in love, be obedient. Jesus stated:
If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
(John 14:15-18)
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
(John 14:21-26)

What can we do for God before the Day of Redemption?
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
(Ephesians 6:10-17)
You will notice here that the only offensive weapon that we have is the sword.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
(Philippians 4:8-9)
And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
(Matthew 13:3-9)
Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
(Matthew 13:18-23)
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
(Galatians 6:9-10)
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
(Matthew 28:19-20)
This does not mean that we have to become full-time pastors, but that we should use every opportunity to witness to others.
I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
(2 Timothy 4:1-2)
Reprove and rebuke are brothers in meaning - to censure.

Exhort means to urge strongly and earnestly.

Because we believe that the Kingdom of God and its power are inside us in the Person of the Holy Spirit, we are able to use that power and will undoubtedly perform miracles in the name of The Lord Jesus Christ. We grow in faith as time goes by and as we remain obedient. God is glorified.

Also listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit, who might ask for, and expect to receive, a specific duty to be done by you.
God knows that we cannot be sinless, but He does expect us to continually try to be so, to ask ourselves "What would Jesus have done?"; to continually keep the image and example of Jesus before us. It will then be found that it becomes easier as time goes by to be more like Jesus. God asks us to do the best, the very best, that we can. If we inadvertently sin, and ask for forgiveness, according to the Covenant it will be granted to us.
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
(1 John 2:1-6)
Propitiation - an act of atoning sacrifice.

What does God do for us before the day of redemption?
Please understand that when man accepts the Covenant, he is God's possession and is under the protection of God.
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
(Matthew 7:7-12)

Here is one example, a story that my Christian brother Darryl loves telling:

A Zulu woman, who had just received her monthly salary was walking down a street in Durban when she heard the sound of running footsteps approaching her from behind. Her handbag containing her salary was wrenched from her and the thief carried on running. She called out "Lord Jesus help me!" whereupon the thief was immediately knocked to the ground unconscious and only woke up a couple of hours later, in prison. You see, she knew that she was in Covenant and believed that the Lord would protect her.

What happens when we break Covenant?
If we, for example, start disobeying the road rules willingly, the Holy Spirit will withdraw from us and we will temporarily lose the spiritual connection with the Heavenly Father. It is like a deadness, a heaviness, that we experience. Some people explain it as losing that first love. We will have to repent and ask for forgiveness.
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. (5) I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. (7) If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
(John 15:1-11)
In verse 5 Jesus asks for obedience, in verse 7 He gives the promise.

To close off this section, let's examine Paul's concern concerning Covenant breakers:
And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods. But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.
(Galatians 3:29 - 4:11)

It would seem that each person will stand before God at the Great White Throne Judgement, where, if we have kept the Covenant to the best of our ability out of love for our Lord, Jesus will "confess our name" before The Heavenly Father that we are in His Book of Life. Thereafter we approach the Bema Judgement Seat of The Lord Jesus Christ to receive our rewards according to our works in Him.
Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
(Acts 17:31)

Other Features of the Crucifixion
This, slightly extended section concerning Covenants is perhaps best studied once the Abrahamic and New Covenants are more fully understood.

Almighty God, the Creator, used the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ to fulfil many facets of His will and glory, as shown us in the Bible.
We have seen in part one (Born Again) how Jesus became the Second Adam and undid Satan's power of death. In the beginning of this part we saw a different aspect of the crucifixion of our Lord, how He became our Covenant Representative and our Redeemer.

Here are two more Covenants, not given in so much detail as before, because it is now time for you to do some searching for yourself.

Also, see what other aspects of God's glory and power, and there are many, which are fulfilled in Jesus Christ, that you can discover with the anointing given you by the Comforter.
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
(1 John 2:27)

The Lamb of God.
This Covenant is oriented towards the Children of Israel, those who were born Jews. They, whose ancestors were led out of Egypt by Moses will understand this Passover Covenant much better than us born again children of Abraham. This does not exclude us however, from being blessed by the evidence of God's majesty, grace and charity (love with works).

Please read Exodus 2:23 to 3:10; Ex 11:1 to 12:14 and verse 22.
Here we see the story of the first passover. You will note once again certain conditions that the LORD makes. Here are some of them:
1. Only those who are willing to enter into Covenant with the LORD need obey.
2. A holy convocation, (a religious gathering, or feast) is to be held on an annual basis in the future so that the people will remember the Covenant.
3. A New Beginning.
4. The lamb must be without spot or blemish.
5. It must be displayed for three days.
6. It must be killed and the blood painted on wood, in the process of which the form of a cross is made in the air.
7. They shall eat the meat with unleavened bread.
8. Nothing must be left behind.
9. Eat and be ready for a journey.
10. Those that do not paint their doorposts with the blood of the lamb will be sorry.
11. In Ex 12:46 we see a curious decree, not a bone of the sacrificial lamb was to be broken.

Let us examine some similarities which culminated at the crucifixion of our Lord:

1. Only those who are prepared to follow Jesus Christ need obey.
2. Jesus commanded us in 1 Corinthians:11 to eat and drink in remembrance of Him; every day if necessary.
3. It is a new beginning for all mankind.
4. Jesus was sinless, without spot or blemish.
5. Jesus displayed Himself for three days in the temple before His arrest.
6. Jesus, at the time of the last supper, which was the passover meal, broke the unleavened bread and said "Here is my body, broken for you, eat in remembrance of me." Likewise the wine: "This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you." Something significant that is half hidden in Luke 22:17 to 20 is the fact that there were TWO cups. If any person reading these words ever has the opportunity of witnessing a presentation of the Passover meal as demonstrated by the Jews for Jesus organisation, don't miss it! The promise of Jesus the Messiah is so clearly shown in the ritual that you will experience cold shivers down your spine. Glory to God!
7. All old things are passed away.
8. Are we ready?
9. All those who do not accept the Blood of the Lamb of God will be sorry.
10. Jesus' bones were not broken, which was unusual with crucifixions. See John 19:33,36

In Perfect Love
Having dealt with a few Covenants between God and man, let us move on to something even more exciting, something that I hesitate to call a covenant, but something much stronger, that has all the flavours of Covenant. The Bible calls it "Oneness".

This Perfect Love is between God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, three perfect Spiritual Beings that are One in purpose. Whether they are more than one spiritual body is not for mere humans to speculate on. We must just believe as children.
I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.
(Ecclesiastes 3:14)

In John 10:30, Jesus said: "I and my Father are one."

In 1 John 5:7 we see that They are one, the triune God, The Godhead.
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

There is an order
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
(John 13:16)
Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
(John 14:28)
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
(1 Corinthians 11:3)
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
(Ephesians 1:17)
And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
(Ephesians 3:9)
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
(Hebrews 1:1-3)

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
(Genesis 1:2)
And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
(Genesis 6:3)
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
(Isaiah 61:1)
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
(John 14:26)
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
(John 15:26)
Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
(Hebrews 10:29)

Neither the Old or New Covenants could have taken place without this perfect love and trust. This is one of the potent weapons that God has against Satan, because Satan rules by fear. We read that he tried to break this Oneness, without success:
And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
(Luke 4:1-13)

Jesus was Obedient
We now know that Jesus was with God from the beginning, that He was "in" God and that He was obedient always. He came onto the earth in the flesh in obedience, He died on the cross in obedience.
These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.
(John 17)
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
(John 20:21)

God is glorified through the example of Jesus
Why did Jesus perform all the miracles?
When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
(John 11:4)

Jesus, when in the flesh, always acknowledged that the power for the miracles came from His Father. For example:
Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
(John 11:41-42)
I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
(John 17:4)

When He died for mankind, Jesus fulfilled His Father's wishes. God now took over.

The Lord Jesus was resurrected by God's power;
Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
(Acts 2:24)
This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
(Acts 2:32)
Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)
(Galatians 1:1)
and set at His right hand (a very strong Covenantal phrase). The resurrected Jesus has now entered His rest and is waiting for God to make His enemies His footstool.
For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
(Hebrews 4:10)
But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.
(Hebrews 10:12-13)
This signifies that His enemies would kneel or lie down, with their foreheads on the floor, enabling Jesus to place His foot (heel) on them. This is an ancient custom, signifying subjugation and is described in various passages of the Bible;
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
(Joshua 10:24)
Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?
(Daniel 8:13)
And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
(Romans 16:20)
For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
(1 Corinthians 15:25)
Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
(Hebrews 10:29)

Jesus is glorified and exalted as a result of His obedience
And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
(John 17:5)
That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.
(Acts 26:23)
And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
(Colossians 1:18-23)

Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
(Philippians 2:4-11)

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
(Hebrews 1:1-3)

When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
(Matthew 25:31-40)

When His enemies have been subjugated, Jesus will then rule the earth in righteousness and His saints will assist.
If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
(2 Timothy 2:12)
Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
(Revelation 20:6)
This is after we, the Bride of Christ, have met the Heavenly Bridegroom, have been set apart with Him for "the seven days of the Huppah" and have then celebrated the bridal feast with Him and with all the heavenly guests.

Let us follow the example of Jesus of Nazareth
If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
(1 Peter 4:11)

Here are some contextual Scriptures
Now that we understand more about God's Covenants, let's look at some Bible passages with new eyes:

Passages from the Old Testament
And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law. There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
(Joshua 8:34-35)
Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.
(Isaiah 55:1-3)

Jesus disclosed His own Covenant with The Heavenly Father many times
Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
(John 5:19-24)
Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
(John 7:16-18)
Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
(John 12:27)
And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
(John 12:50)
But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
(John 14:31)
I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
(John 17:4)

God's Covenant Hand
That thy beloved may be delivered; save with thy right hand, and hear me.
(Psalms 60:5)
A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
(Psalms 110:1)
The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation. The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly. The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.
(Psalms 118:14-17)
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
(Isaiah 41:10)
The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
(Isaiah 52:10)
Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
(Acts 2:33)
Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
(Romans 8:34)
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
(Hebrews 12:2)

Man's hand
Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:
(Psalms 144:11)
And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
(Acts 3:7)
And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.
(Acts 9:12)
And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
(Acts 9:17)
And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.
(Acts 9:41)
And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.
(Galatians 2:9)

A few New Covenant examples
All things that the Father hath are mine: (John 16:15a)
And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
(Acts 17:26)
As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from fornication.
(Acts 21:25)
Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
(John 8:28-29)
Compare verse 28 with John 3:14
And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
(1 John 3:19-24)

Some beautiful examples of Old Covenant passages
Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle [is] the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands.
(1 Samuel 17:45-47)
This seems to indicate that Goliath was dead on his feet before the stone penetrated his temple.
Please read 2 Chronicles 20.

The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.
(Psalms 25:14)
[A Psalm] of David, Maschil. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
(Psalms 32:1)
Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.
(Psalms 50:5)

A Psalm of Asaph. The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined. Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah. Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God. I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me. I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds. For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof. Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats? Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth? Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee. When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers. Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit. Thou sittest speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son. These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver. Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.
(Psalms 50)

For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
(Psalms 51:16-17)
He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.
(Psalms 55:20)
Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.
(Psalms 56:12)
I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.
(Psalms 69:30-31)

Psalm 103 says it all.
[A Psalm] of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's. The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed. He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children; To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them. The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all. Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure. Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.

Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation. The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein. His work is honourable and glorious: and his righteousness endureth for ever. He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion. He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant. He hath shewed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of the heathen. The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure. They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness. He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
(Psalms 111)

O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts. I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me. How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments. I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word. Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments. My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not forget thy law. The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts. Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart. I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.
(Psalms 119:97-112)

Read this passage of Scripture and discover how much better you understand it now, compared to the last time that you read it:
For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used. For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
(Hebrews 9:19 to 10:39)

Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
(Hebrews 13:20-21)
